Sodium dodecyl sulfate / sodium lauryl sulfate (SDS) is the most widely used chemical in everyday soaps, toothpaste, creams, shampoos, home laundry, agricultural activities, laboratories and factories. When sodium is mixed with water, it can harm aquatic organisms, microorganisms and related organisms, and worsen the quality of drinking water.
Thus IIT Roorkee formed a team of 5 researchers to carry out the study to develop a bacterial biosensor against it. Currently that bacterial biosensor has been discovered.
To date no specific biosensors have been developed to detect SDS with high accuracy. But now the IIT Roorkee team has developed a full-cell biosensor using the Pseudomonas aeruginosa PAO1 strain. Separates SDS from metal and mineral ions and differentiates sodium dodecylbenzene sulfonate.
The study was conducted by the MSc Biotechnology team at IIT Roorkee on lead researcher Saurik Day. It is also stated that such measures are taken to protect the environment from pollution.
